When It Comes To Facial Expressions Humans Are Good Actors

This is a photograph my friend snapped of me. I naturally smiled when I saw her snapping the shot of me. My smiles makes me appear to be happy. However, I am actually not at all happy. I was on the phone with my boyfriend and we were in a huge fight. I was extremely frustrated and annoyed with him. I put on the smile for the picture to pretend that I was happy. If one were to look at the picture he or she would more than likely assume I was happy because of my facial expression. Facial expressions are not always true to the emotion that one is feeling. We as humans are particularly good actors when it comes to facial expressions. As this picture shows, it is fairly easy to cover up a how one really feels with a simple facial expression

  1. I find myself doing this all the time when i'm upset. It is easy to put a smile on your face for others in order to hide your true feelings, especially if you don't want someone to know that you are upset. For example, for my birthday last year, one of my friends got me a purse and honestly it was not my favorite gift, but instead of showing her my true emotions, I smiled and told her that I loved it because it was the right thing to do. Sometimes we mask our feelings in order to protect others, but there are cases when we are either really good at hiding it or we are really bad at hiding.

  2. This makes me think of the "fake smile" face. Sometimes you can't help doing it for a picture even if you know it doesn't look natural and sometimes you can't help it! When I wore a retainer after getting braces off, I used the invisalign and it always looked like I was trying too hard to do a "fake smile" when I took pictures. But having retainers in your mouth even though they are invisible still make you smile funny!
