How American and Japanese Cultures Intepret Emotion

This article discusses how American and Japanese cultures interpret emotion differently. In Japan the focus to interpret emotion is on the eyes, whereas in America the focus is on the mouth.  Because different cultures focus on different areas of the face to interpret emotion, Ekman’s theory that there are 7 universally recognized emotions may be false. Perhaps it is one’s culture that plays a key role in identifying emotion.
